A Glimpse of a Dowry-free Civilization

January 8, 2019What would a woman desire after seven daughters? That’s right, a son!
It was her sole aspiration in life; to have a son. Nothing else mattered, all other wants seemed to disappear. The only thing she prayed for was a son; so much, that she couldn’t think of making other Du’as.
Her yearning was over and she was finally blessed with a boy. She felt like she had conquered the world. She rejoiced and forgot the very long period of wait she resisted. She was on cloud nine and had no other desires in life.
As the years passed by, gradually she was faced with new challenges every day. He was a troublesome child and as he grew older, he got into some very bad habit. He was definitely not the apple of her eyes.
She lamented having him in her life. She regretted praying for him. What had made her yearn for him so desperately?
The answer is simple. Social pressure. Society expects a woman to give a son. Giving birth to a son raises a woman’s standards apparently.
The society is made of you and me. We have to change our mindset, we have to change our behaviour.
Allah has said that he gives sons to whom He wills, He gives daughters to whom He wills. Both for some and none for some. It is His divine wisdom. And in it lies hidden benefit for human beings.

Dete hain jo dua chaand se beton ki,
Kya nahi jaani ehmiyaat betiyon ki.
Kyun nahi di rehmat ki sada,
Mumkin tha qubool ho jaati wo dua.
دیتے ہیں جو دعا چاند سے بیٹوں کی
کیا نہیں جانی اہمیت بیٹیوں کی
کیوں نہیں دی رحمت کی سدا
